In his first book, Fustanini reveals some basic concepts common to the whole science of neuroses.
This is, first of all, the idea that neurosis is a disease of the personality and that neuroses arise as a result of dissonance between the unconscious and the conscious.
Much attention is also paid here to the question of the causes of neurotic disorders.
One such cause is that the individual fails to see the connection between the neurotic symptoms and his own unconscious urges.
Therefore, it should be said that Freud’s ideas are close to Adler’s views in many respects.
Freud wrote that “psychoanalysis is in a sense a return to Adler, it is based on the same theory as Adler’s theory, but it is more radical and therefore more effective.
According to Freud’s views, neurosis occurs when in any area of life
insufficient cravings are present, or when these unsatisfied cravings cause the emergence of defense mechanisms that create obstacles and block them.
Thus, the neurotic is the one who “has no attraction to an object.
This is the essence of Freud’s psychoanalytic views.
Later, as psychoanalysis has evolved, it has been shown that the psychoanalytic understanding of neurosis is insufficient; moreover, it may not exhaust the full diversity of neurotic manifestations.
As a result, there is a need for broader generalizations.
In this regard, it has been suggested that the basic forms of defensive actions and reactions so characteristic of neurotic functioning may also have their roots in the early period of human life.
There are two circumstances associated with this assumption, as well as with the psychoanalytic theory of neurosis.
On the one hand, it is an acknowledgment of the fact that neurosis may have not only a psychological basis, but also a biological one.
On the other hand, this assumption is the basis for the so-called biological theory of neuroses, which emerged in the 1930s and subsequently became extremely fashionable.
In this connection, it should be noted that in recent years, psychoanalysis, as well as other areas of psychology, has brought to the fore a concept according to which neurosis is seen not as something that arises in accordance with a particular psychological theory, but as the result of certain biological factors.
