AutoCAD is the name of Autodesk’s most popular product, an AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal.

AutoCAD is also available as mobile and web apps.

The current version of AutoCAD, 2016, is used in the design of buildings, factories, vehicles, and pipelines, among other products. AutoCAD’s powerful drawing, 3D modeling, and rendering features enable users to construct, annotate, and manage highly detailed models and drawings that are often used in complex construction projects. AutoCAD is available as a native desktop program, as a web and mobile app, or as a subscription service on a monthly or yearly basis. AutoCAD is installed on computer systems throughout the world, and many companies and organizations use it for product design.

In this wiki, we’ll explore Autodesk AutoCAD, the different AutoCAD components, and the different AutoCAD features. We’ll also see how to create and use drawings in the AutoCAD application.

Autodesk AutoCAD Components

AutoCAD consists of several components. The system runs best with a minimum of peripherals. We’ll start by exploring these components.

AutoCAD is bundled with the following preinstalled components:

1. Application

In AutoCAD 2016, the Application component includes:

• The AutoCAD User Interface (UI) window, which displays most of the drawing and design tools and properties.

• The Tools component, which offers access to the many tools available in the Application component.

• The Options component, which contains dialog boxes and drop-down lists that offer settings for many of the tool options and component properties.

2. System Tray

AutoCAD system tray is a small window that appears on the taskbar and holds icons for AutoCAD and other program components. On Windows and macOS systems, you can move and add icons to the system tray by selecting “Add”

In AutoCAD, modeling features are exposed through a command line interface or a user interface. Commands can be accessed and run via a system console, a command-line interface, or a user interface. The modeling commands include the ability to create and edit the following objects:
solids, surfaces, and edges.
line and arc definitions.
hatch patterns and ellipses.
multi-segmented objects, such as splines, ellipse splines, and circle splines.
arrows, circles, and arcs.
blends, bends, cut, fill, move, split, and trim.
three-dimensional features.
hatch patterns and ellipses.
on-screen displays.
temporary viewports.
custom text objects.

In addition, AutoCAD includes many predefined macros and functions, such as rotations and text formatting. Predefined macros include align-view, erase, insert, markup, move, offset-view, print, and so on. AutoCAD’s user interface is modeled on the Windows taskbar, menu bar, and a set of user interfaces for each command line. The Command menu contains tools for working with the current drawing, for controlling and managing the current drawing (undo, redo, cut, copy, paste, and formatting), for managing selection sets, for working with property dialogs, and for working with multiple drawings. The Command Line holds the user’s input and output information. It displays selections, viewports, and property values.

In addition to the models mentioned above, AutoCAD includes the following features:
a DXF file format for importing and exporting drawing information;
a machine-readable format for part or assembly drawings (formerly referred to as DGN) that facilitates their printing, annotation, or viewing with third-party applications;
the ability to create and view STEP files for export to other CAD software;
CADG 5 features such as multiple perspective views, UCS, and orthographic view;
parametric views and transformations;
command-line (CLI) interfaces for the application that support integration with other applications through the Windows API, the command-line host, and the AutoLISP language;
online help;
unique user-level tools, such as the 2D line and area tools; and
a drawing data

AutoCAD For Windows

There will be two new shortcuts created to launch Autocad and Autocadviewer from the desktop.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Double Click on ‘Add or Remove Programs’

On the left you will see ‘Add/Remove Programs’.

There is a column with icons to show you the program you currently have installed on your computer. Select Autocadviewer and click on ‘Remove’ in the control panel.

You’ll see the Autocad program is uninstalled from your computer, close the Control Panel, and you should be ready to go.

To launch Autocad from the desktop, go to Start > Control Panel > Double Click on Autocad

You should now see the Autocad icon on the desktop.

To launch Autocadviewer from the desktop, go to Start > Control Panel > Double Click on Autocadviewer

You should now see the Autocadviewer icon on the desktop.

How to add Autocadviewer shortcut to desktop

Download and run Autocadviewer launcher.

When the launcher launches, press ‘Add’

Choose the shortcut that you want to add (see screenshot below).

A shortcut to Autocad will be added to your desktop.

To launch Autocad, double click on the shortcut.

Use Autocadviewer menu to launch Autocad directly from the desktop.

Go to File > Menu > Options.

From the dropdown menu, choose ‘Create a New Menu’.

Under the ‘Save New Menu’ menu, choose Autocadviewer.

A shortcut to Autocad will be added to your desktop.

To launch Autocad, double click on the shortcut.

What’s New In AutoCAD?

The current drawing mode is referred to as “Single Draw” or “Graphic” mode and presents a few problems:

The operator is required to choose between a certain level of efficiency in working with tools and graphics or speed and productivity

In Single Draw mode, the drawings are not shown in the tab list to allow users to find a specific drawing

In Graphic mode, when the operator needs to find a specific drawing from the many available drawings, the time taken to search can be substantial

AutoCAD 2020 introduced “Markup Assist” to address these issues. Markup Assist allows the user to convert the drawing into a “Single Draw” format, to easily find the current drawing, and to load the AutoCAD drawings directly into the current drawing. In addition, it prevents the loss of any text objects or graphics from the current drawing. (Note: Markup Assist is not compatible with AutoLISP)

On the other hand, the drawing mode remains in Graphic mode, and the drawings are kept in the tab list. AutoCAD does not send graphics to the markup engine and the user must create them first. The new feature “Markup Import” automatically converts the user’s current drawings into “Single Draw” mode and automatically incorporates the user’s drawings into the current drawing.

Tool functions like AutoLISP or AutoCAD 2019LW can be used to convert the current drawings to “Single Draw” mode. (Note: AutoCAD’s web app can only use the Markup Import feature.)

You can install the Markup Import and Markup Assist features by selecting “Add-on Functions and Updates” from the “Help” menu (Ctrl+F1). If you install this new feature, the Add-on Functions & Updates window will display an “Add-on Tools Install Check” window, where you must select the check box to allow AutoCAD to install the new functions.

Markup Import

The Markup Import feature converts the current drawing into “Single Draw” mode, imports the user’s drawings into the current drawing, and automatically updates the drawing objects and drawings. When the Markup Import feature is installed, it will convert the current drawing into “Single Draw” mode. When this is done, the drawing mode will be automatically set to “Single Draw” mode. The user’s drawing will be imported into the current drawing and the drawing’s text objects and graphics will be maintained in the current drawing.
